For both children and adults the importance of developing swimming skills and learning to love the water can not be understated.

Swimming lessons are important for several reasons:

  1. Safety:
Swimming is a popular recreational activity, but it can also be dangerous for those who are not confident in the water. Swimming lessons can teach children and adults essential water safety skills, such as floating, treading water, and knowing how to reach safety in case of an emergency.

Royal Life Saving Australia reports that 40 per cent of children leave primary school not being able to swim 50 metres or float for two minutes - basic water safety benchmarks and the lack of skills isn’t limited to children with one in four Australians admitting they are weak swimmers – or can’t swim at all.
  2. Physical Health:
Staying active regularly is essential for good physical and mental health and wellbeing. Swimming is a great form of exercise that provides a full-body workout and can help to improve cardiovascular fitness, strength, and flexibility.

Check out the Australian Department of Health's Physical Activity and Exercise Guidelines for the amount of activity, depending on your age, you should be doing.
  3. Confidence:
Swimming lessons can help individuals to feel more confident in the water and to develop a positive relationship with aquatic environments, which can increase their enjoyment of water activities.

With so many coastal and inland waterways in addition to aquatic parks and backyard swimming pools to take advantage of in Perth and regional areas, being able to make the most of what is on offer can only make leisure time more fun.
  4. Life Skill:
Swimming is a valuable life skill that can be used for recreation, physical fitness, and as a survival skill. Knowing how to swim can also provide individuals with increased opportunities for travel and adventure.

Overall, swimming lessons are important for promoting safety, physical and mental health, and providing individuals with a valuable life skill.
